Uno de los elementos arquitectónicos que hemos encontrado como una constante en las casas de Cozumel es "La Celosía" con motivos orgánicos y patrones de animales como: peces, cisnes o pegasos. En el museo de la isla de Cozumel se presenta una interesante exposición de fotografía que conforma un proyecto de promoción cultural para la isla de San Miguel de Cozumel realizado por Atenas Beltrán Uriz. Se recomienda visitarla porque además de la buena estética de las imágenes invita de una manera inteligente y creativa a reflexionar sobre el entorno urbano de nuestra entidad. Disfrutemos lo que nos comenta Atenas en la entrevista que gentilmente otorgó para Art News Cozumel.
-Soy Atenas Beltrán Úriz y soy licenciada en historiadora del arte por la Universidad Iberoamericana, especializada en administración de galerías de arte, curadora, investigadora y fotógrafa. También fundadora y directora de " Arte Capomo" gestoría de arte y cultura. Soy de la Ciudad de México.
-¿Que te motivo hacer este proyecto?
-Todo empezó como una inquietud personal por estos espacios cotidianos que tiene la isla, me empezaron a llamar la atención, los motivos arquitectónicos muy particulares y genuinos de la isla y cosas que no había visto en otros lugares de la república. Entonces empecé a tomar fotografías. Quise hacer una pequeña documentación de esos motivos que estaba viendo. Me di cuenta que en Cozumel no había ninguna iniciativa que se preocupara por estos espacios ni un archivo fotográfico de la ciudad. Fue así que decido hacer esta investigación con la intención de crear un libro de arquitectura cozumeleña y ver que más había en la isla más allá de esta visión paradisíaca y turística que permea sobre toda la estructura política de Cozumel. Fue algo muy intimo y personal , digamos curiosidad sin matar al gato, quería saber ¿si estos eran motivos particulares de la isla? ¿si había una arquitectura isleña? ¿qué características tiene? ¿porqué se construyó así? ¿cuánto tiempo tienen estas casas? los materiales, los colores, el estilo de vida de la gente, ¿por qué?
A partir del arte y la arquitectura hablamos de un contexto y podemos saber sobre la sociedad que vive en ella, es un estudio antropológico.
¿Cuánto tiempo te tomó desarrollar estas fotografías?
-El proyecto lo empecé hace tres meses cuando llegué a Cozumel, empecé a realizar fotografía sobre lo que más me gustaba y comente con unos amigos la idea de recolectar estos motivos de arquitectura isleña. Ese fue realmente el inicio del proyecto. Actualmente tengo una catalogación de ciento y tantas fotografías, entre casas, espacios abandonados, hoteles etc.Obviamente es un trabajo de campo y creo que va a llevar más de un año avanzar en esta investigación.
Es el inicio del archivo fotográfico, así que tiene que continuar, para preservar el patrimonio de la isla, es una cosa histórica.
-¿Haz encontrado algún archivo fotográfico de la urbanización de la isla de Cozumel?
-No, no he encontrado todavía nada.
¿Cuáles son los motivos particulares de la isla, qué estilo arquitectónico tienen las casas de Cozumel?
-Uno de los elementos arquitectónicos que hemos encontrado como una constante en las casas de Cozumel es "La Celosía" con motivos orgánicos y patrones de animales como: peces, cisnes o pegasos. Se observan desde animales mitológicos hasta animales de la granja, es gracioso e interesante ver caballos alados pertenecientes a la mitología griega en las casas de una isla caribeña
Las balaustradas son otro elemento constante y sin duda uso de las columnas griegas, hay doricas, corintias y jónicas, no sé son elementos que me parecen realmente una cosa fuera de lugar. También tenemos el uso de la madera material base de la arquitectura caribeña.
La distribución de las casas es muy parecida; el plafón muy bajo, una estructura cuadrada, un pequeño pasillo y un jardín muy grande obviamente por el calor que hace acá, entonces hay elementos que hay que ir rescatando y numerando.
-¿Vas a exponer este proyecto para la gente de México?
-Pues sí, me gustaría y también buscar diferentes alternativas para exponer en distintos lugares de la república para que la gente pueda ver que hay más allá del buceo y de la onda paradisiaca, estaría padrísimo eso.
-¿Cuantas fotografías comprende el proyecto?
- Tengo aproximadamente 151.
-¿Los dueños de las casas en donde le tomas las fotografías de sus fachadas les pediste permiso, hablaste con ellos?
-Algunas, las del inicio, cuando empecé el proyecto pues no, iba en la bicicleta y de repente decía oye que bonito está esto y le tomaba una fotografía con el celular, y pasaba otras dos calles y decía oye que bonito está esto y le tomaba otra fotografía, después se volvió más serio y empecé a tomar fotografías con mi cámara y a preguntar a la gente que habitaba
Me decían que tienen que ver con las épocas y con lo que les vendían acá, venden los bloques de los pegasos, hoy llegaron los delfines entonces ellos construían con los delfines. Y son familias que tienen al menos 50 años en Cozumel y sus casa también. Me comentaban algunos: mis abuelos compraron este terreno en $20 pesos, entonces estamos hablando de la historia de los cozumeleños.
El chico que vino a poner el vinil de la exposición vio algunas fotos y me dijo; esta es la casa de mi abuelita y me dijo: ¿puedo traer a mi abuelita a ver la exposición? le va encantar ver la casa en una exposición.
Así pasaba y tomaba la foto y salía la señora ¿para qué es la foto? es para una exposición entonces me platicaba la historia
En otra casa tuve que pedir a un señor si podía mover su carro, porque todos los días pasaba por esa casa y le quería tomar fotos pero siempre me tapaba la toma el carro. (casa de la celosia de pegasos pintada de morada) Pasaba diario, y pensaba que bonita casa ¿por qué tiene amarillo, morado, blanco? y dije tengo que tomar una foto de esta casa, así que toque y pedí de favor si podían mover el carro.
Entre a la casa hable con el señor le platique del proyecto: ojalá usted pueda ir a la exposición y me contestó "no para qué, yo veo diario mi casa, se la voy a heredar si quiere. Así he conocido la gente. Hay gente que si está interesada, que se emociona y lo ve muy suyo y hay otras personas que les da gracia. Lo que veo es que la gente de Cozumel se reconoce en las fotografías, hay un entendimiento y eso me gusta mucho, el espectador está teniendo por medio de la fotografía una experiencia muy especial, muy personal.
Un chico me dijo mi casa se llama casa tortuga, es una casa muy antigua, me gustaría que estuviera en el acervo a ver si puedes tomarle unas fotografías. La gente de Cozumel está abierta y muy feliz de que se este creando este tipo de iniciativas, es su vida cotidiana y nadie le da el valor que merece. la exposición en el museo, la gente va a disfrutar mucho, es una exposición para la gente cozumeleña.
-¿Qué te pareció el museo de la isla de Cozumel?
-Me encantó, la verdad no me lo esperaba, estaba escéptica de lo que iba a encontrar en el museo. Cuando llegue a la isla estaba buscando galerías de arte, museos y no encontré más que parques para ir a nadar: que el delfinario, que Playa mía, lugares relacionados a la naturaleza, y cuando fui al museo me gusto mucho, creo que la obra está muy bien seleccionada, los espacios están muy, muy bien adaptados. La forma como cuenta la historia de Cozumel es didáctica e interesante.
Es un museo de primer nivel, me parece las salas tienen la temperatura adecuada, la obra seleccionada es buena.
¿Que te parece la obra del maestro Shinzaburo Takeda que actualmente se está exhibiendo en el museo?
-¡Me encanta! justamente me sorprendió mucho y me emocione mucho, yo estaba viviendo en Oaxaca antes de venir a Cozumel, entonces cuando entre al museo y vi que que era de Takeda pues me fascino y la selección de obra es muy acertada. La obra grande, que simula pequeños mosaicos que mide aproximadamente 5 metros es impresionante, y pues bueno es un maestro muy reconocido y su trabajo es de calidad. Ha tenido mucha influencia en toda la gráfica sobre todo oaxaqueña, de México y del mundo.
Concreto y salitre: la exposición se llama así haciendo alusión al material de construcción que se va afectado por el salitre, sufriendo una transformación. La gente de aquí tiene una creencia que la isla genera una energía propia que cambia a la gente que convivimos con ella. En mi experiencia si lo ha hecho, justamente esta esencia que tiene la isla, esta energía es una fuerza muy caribeña y muy particular, de repente la isla te da todo y a veces te empuja a irte pero depende también de la energía que estés proyectando, esa esencia que tiene Cozumel es muy real y muy única.
-Ahora lo que también es interesante en esta investigación es hablar del contexto actual de Cozumel para saber donde estamos parados el porque con todos estos hoteles, cadenas hoteleras gigantes, lo que está pasando, departamentos que son muy parecidos o como va toda esta onda citadina urbana, pues se pierde un poco toda esta tradición que tiene Cozumel que son edificios y casa pequeñas y motivos que ya no se producen, eso llamo patrimonio cultural cozumeleño y es importante protegerlo, hacer una catalogación de fachadas que se no se derriben, restaurar las casas por dentro para que estén bien. Así como en el centro de la ciudad de México o en el centro de Oaxaca hay cientos de edificios y casas catalogadas como patrimonio cultural del estado. Yo creo que Cozumel debería tener esto ¿no?
- ¿Cuántas casas por dentro haz visto con estas características?
-Al menos consideraría 20 casas que podrían ser patrimonio cultural de Cozumel, que sería muy relevante cuidarlas para su preservación y para la historia de Cozumel, ya que sino después se pueden perder entre ,el Westin, el Intercontinental o el Secrets. ¿qué pasa con el Cozumel viejo y con estos motivos y arquitectura tradicional sino los cuidamos?
-¿Durante tus visitas a la isla cual es tu opinión sobre la escena actual de la comunidad artística?
Hay dos problemáticas; la producción artística de Cozumel y el apoyo a los artistas locales. Habría que buscar alternativas para poder solucionar y apoyar a los artistas a tener exposiciones, así como generar arte de calidad y propositivo para seguir generando cultura.
- Ha sido muy complejo encontrar artistas que sean de la isla, estuve buscando pintores, escultores, muralistas he conocido algunos personajes, pero la mayoría están enfocados yo diría en streed art y el mural, tienen muy buena técnica plástica. Pero están enfocados en la naturaleza de Cozumel ó en esta cuestión energética, la mayoría de los artistas nos relatan que se ve en la naturaleza el pulpo, los mapaches toda esta flora y fauna de Cozumel que obviamente se entiende por lo paradisiaco. Pero no veo un interés por de investigación, ni un cuestionamiento, hay artistas interesantes, hay una iniciativa que me gusta se llama Barracuda Gallery la fundadora es Alma, artista plástica de la ciudad de México.
Ellos tienen una producción interesante y se involucran de alguna manera también con el movimiento de la ciudad.
La mayoría de los artista que viven aquí no son de Cozumel, vienen de fuera y no hay una preocupación digamos social. No encontramos arte conceptual ni performance. Hay una iniciativa de murales que me parece interesante, por lo que investigué y lo que supe es una iniciativa que no es de la isla, al parecer a los artistas locales no se le dá tanta promoción y se trae gente de otros lugares a pintar Cozumel, es una pena que no haya tanta difusión para los artistas de aquí.
Arte Capomo es una gestoría de arte y cultura que funge como incubadora de arte por medio de una galería itinerante, con la intención de comunicar valores culturales, provocar un dialogo a través del pensamiento crítico y promover el arte.
APORTES CULTURALES AL REALIZAR ESTA INICIATIVA EN COZUMEL
-El inicio de un archivo fotográfico de arquitectura Cozumeleña.
-Brindarle importancia a los espacios cotidianos de la Isla.
-Reconocer la belleza y estética arquitectónica Cozumeleña.
-Reconocer una identidad por medio de la arquitectura.

-I am Atenas Beltrán Uriz and I have a degree in art history from the Universidad Iberoamericana, specializing in art gallery administration, curator, researcher and photographer. I am also founder and director of "Arte Capomo" art and culture management. I am from Mexico City.
-What motivated you to do this project?
-It all started as a personal concern for these everyday spaces that the island has, I began to call my attention, the very particular and genuine architectural motifs of the island and things that I had not seen in other parts of the republic. Then I began to take photographs. I wanted to make a small documentation of those motifs I was seeing. I realized that in Cozumel there was no initiative that cared about these spaces or a photographic archive of the city. So I decided to do this research with the intention of creating a book on Cozumel architecture and see what else there was on the island beyond this paradisiacal and touristic vision that permeates the entire political structure of Cozumel. It was something very intimate and personal, let's say curiosity without killing the cat, I wanted to know if these were particular motifs of the island? if there was an island architecture? what characteristics does it have? why was it built like this? how old are these houses? the materials, the colors, the lifestyle of the people, why?
From art and architecture we talk about a context and we can know about the society that lives there, it is an anthropological study.
How long did it take you to develop these photographs?
-I started the project three months ago when I arrived in Cozumel, I began to take photographs of what I liked the most and I discussed with some friends the idea of collecting these motifs of island architecture. That was really the beginning of the project. Currently I have a catalog of one hundred and so many photographs, including houses, abandoned spaces, hotels, etc. Obviously it is a field work and I think it will take more than a year to advance in this research.
It is the beginning of the photographic archive, so it has to continue, to preserve the heritage of the island, it is a historical thing.
-Have you found any photographic archive of the urbanization of the island of Cozumel?
-No, I haven't found anything yet.
What are the particular motifs of the island, what architectural style do the houses of Cozumel have?
-One of the architectural elements that we have found as a constant in the houses of Cozumel is "La Celosia" with organic motifs and animal patterns such as fish, swans or pegasus. From mythological animals to farm animals, it is funny to interesting to see winged horses belonging to Greek mythology in the houses of a Caribbean island.
The balustrades are another constant element and certainly use of Greek columns, there are Doric, Corinthian and Ionic, I do not know are elements that seem to me really one thing out of place. We also have the use of wood, the basic material of Caribbean architecture.
The distribution of the houses is very similar; the ceiling is very low, a square structure, a small hallway and a very large garden, obviously because of the heat here, so there are elements that must be rescued and numbered.
-Are you going to exhibit this project for the people of Mexico?
-Yes, I would like to, and I would also like to look for different alternatives to exhibit it in different parts of the country so that people can see what's beyond the diving and the paradise vibe, that would be great.
-How many photographs does the project include?
- I have approximately 151.
-Did you ask the owners of the houses where you took the photographs of their facades for permission, did you talk to them?
-Some of them, the ones at the beginning, when I started the project, no, I was riding my bicycle and suddenly I would say hey how beautiful this is and I would take a picture with my cell phone, and I would pass another two streets and say hey how beautiful this is and I would take another picture, then it became more serious and I started to take pictures with my camera and ask the people who lived there, they told me that they have to do with the times and with what they sell here, they sell the houses here, they sell the houses here.

And they are families that have been in Cozumel for at least 50 years and their houses too. The guy who came to put up the vinyl of the exhibition saw some pictures and told me: this is my grandmother's house and he said: can I bring my grandmother to see the exhibition? she will love to see the house in an exhibition.
So I went by and took the picture and the lady came out, "What is the picture for? it is for an exhibition, so she told me the story".
In another house I had to ask a man if I could move his car, because every day I passed by that house and I wanted to take pictures of it but the car always blocked the shot. (house with the pegasus lattice painted purple) I passed by every day, and I thought what a nice house, why does it have yellow, purple, white? and I said I have to take a picture of this house, so I knocked and asked if they could move the car.
I went into the house and talked to the man and told him about the project: I hope you can go to the exhibition and he answered "no, I see my house every day, I will inherit it if you want. That is how I have met people. There are people who are interested, who are excited and see it as very much theirs, and there are others who find it funny. What I see is that the people of Cozumel recognize themselves in the photographs, there is an understanding and I like that very much, the viewer is having a very special, very personal experience through photography.
A guy told me my house is called casa tortuga, it is a very old house, I would like it to be in the acquis to see if you can take some pictures of it. The people of Cozumel are open and very happy that this type of initiative is being created, it is their daily life and nobody gives it the value it deserves. The exhibition in the museum, people will enjoy it very much, it is an exhibition for the people of Cozumel.
-What did you think of the Cozumel Island Museum?
-I really didn't expect it, I was skeptical about what I was going to find in the museum. When I arrived on the island I was looking for art galleries, museums and I found nothing but parks to go swimming: the dolphinarium, Playa mía, places related to nature, and when I went to the museum I liked it very much, I think the work is very well selected, the spaces are very, very well adapted. The way it tells the history of Cozumel is didactic and interesting.
It is a first class museum, I think the rooms have the right temperature, the selected work is good.
What do you think of the work of master Shinzaburo Takeda that is currently being exhibited at the museum?
-I was living in Oaxaca before coming to Cozumel, so when I entered the museum and saw that it was by Takeda, I was fascinated and the selection of works is very accurate. The large work, which simulates small mosaics measuring approximately 5 meters is impressive, and well, he is a very recognized master and his work is of high quality. He has had a great influence on all the graphic art, especially in Oaxaca, Mexico and the world.
Cozumel has something particular and it is more noticeable, it is more constant and as it is like a small city, the colors that Cozumel has and others provide a different essence, very different from Playa el Carmen, Tulum or Merida. It has a very surreal essence, very Mexican. You walk down the street and you see a purple house and suddenly a person passes by wearing a purple shirt with the same color of the house and next to it a bicycle that contrasts with the complementary color, they are like very bizarre things that Cozumel visually keeps. It is precisely in this exhibition that I talk a little about this.
Concrete and saltpeter: the exhibition is so called in reference to the construction material that is affected by the saltpeter, undergoing a transformation. The people here have a belief that the island generates its own energy that changes the people who live with it. In my experience it has, precisely this essence that the island has, this energy is a very Caribbean and very particular force, suddenly the island gives you everything and sometimes it pushes you to leave but it also depends on the energy that you are projecting, this essence that Cozumel has is very real and very unique.
-Now what is also interesting in this research is to talk about the current context of Cozumel to know where we stand, because with all these hotels, giant hotel chains, what is happening, apartments that are very similar or how this whole urban city wave is going, well, all this tradition that Cozumel has is lost, which are buildings and small houses and motifs that no longer occur, I call this Cozumel's cultural heritage and it is important to protect it, to catalog the facades so they are not demolished, restore the houses inside so that they are fine. Just as in downtown Mexico City or downtown Oaxaca there are hundreds of buildings and houses catalogued as cultural heritage of the state. I think Cozumel should have this, don't you?
- How many houses inside have you seen with these characteristics?
-I would consider at least 20 houses that could be cultural heritage of Cozumel, and it would be very important to take care of them for their preservation and for the history of Cozumel, otherwise they could be lost among the Westin, the Intercontinental or the Secrets. What happens with the old Cozumel and with these motifs and traditional architecture if we do not take care of them?
-During your visits to the island, what is your opinion about the current scene of the artistic community?
There are two problems; artistic production in Cozumel and support for local artists. It would be necessary to look for alternatives to be able to solve and support artists to have exhibitions, as well as to generate quality and propositive art to continue generating culture.
- It has been very difficult to find artists from the island, I was looking for painters, sculptors, muralists, I have met some characters, but most of them are focused I would say in streed art and mural, they have a very good plastic technique. But they are focused on the nature of Cozumel or in this energetic question, most of the artists tell us that they see in nature the octopus, the raccoons, all this flora and fauna of Cozumel that obviously is understood by the paradisiacal. But I don't see an interest in research, nor a questioning, there are interesting artists, there is an initiative that I like called Barracuda Gallery, the founder is Alma, a plastic artist from Mexico City.
They have an interesting production and are also involved in some way with the movement of the city.
Most of the artists who live here are not from Cozumel, they come from outside and there is no social concern. We do not find conceptual art or performance. There is an initiative of murals that seems interesting to me, from what I investigated and what I knew it is an initiative that is not from the island, apparently local artists are not given so much promotion and people from other places are brought to paint Cozumel, it is a pity that there is not so much diffusion for the artists from here.
