"Aunque el tema era el Día de los Muertos, también quería que se sintiera como Cozumel, y como los antepasados pueden haber celebrado este tiempo de manera humilde y sencilla con la pesca, la música, la danza y el Cempasúchi"

     Después de un largo tiempo de inactividad a causa de la contingencia sanitaria se realiza la primera exposición colectiva en el Museo de la Isla de Cozumel, esta exhibición lleva el nombre de Honrando la Muerte 2 donde 38 obras de integrantes de la comunidad artística cozumeleña nos comparten sus expresiones creativas sobre una de las temáticas más queridas y populares de México; el día de muertos. Nutrida muestra visual que ofrece este espacio que es sin lugar a dudas uno de los centros preferidos de los protagonistas del arte de la Isla de Cozumel, recinto donde la agradable convivencia entre ellos es evidente, siempre atentos a lo que sus colegas comparten en cada muestra e interesados a saber de los comentarios que ellos hacen de sus trabajos, sobre todo en estos tiempos de encierro donde los pintores, escultores y demás han estado produciendo su obra en sus talleres u hogares y compartiéndola principalmente en las redes sociales en internet. Y que con esta exhibición tuvieron el respiro de compartir su trabajo físicamente para la interacción del público asistente al Museo de la Isla de Cozumel. Muchas gracias al Museo y a la Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel por este respiro.

After a long time of inactivity due to the health contingency, the first collective exhibition is held at the Museum of the Island of Cozumel, this exhibition is called Honoring Death 2 where 38 works of art from members of the Cozumel artistic community share with us their creative expressions on one of the most loved and popular themes in Mexico; the day of the dead. This nourishing visual exhibition offers this space that is without a doubt one of the favorite centers of the protagonists of the art of the Island of Cozumel, enclosure where the pleasant coexistence among them is evident, always attentive to what their colleagues share in each sample and interested to know of the comments that they make of their works, mainly in these times of confinement where the painters, sculptors and others have been producing their work in their workshops or homes and sharing it mainly in the social networks in Internet. And that with this exhibition they had the respite to share their work physically for the interaction of the public attending the Museum of the Island of Cozumel. Many thanks to the Museum and to the Foundation of Parks and Museums of Cozumel for this respite. Congratulations to all of the exhibitors of this colorful and heart-warming exhibition. Entrevista a Toñita

-¿Tu nombre por favor?                                                                                                                        -Autumn Morgan (Toñita)

-¿A qué te dedicas?                                                                                                                                - Profesionalmente, soy Artista, Muralista, Escritor y Director de Marketing. También soy madre de 3 niños, 6 gatos, un perro y 2 peces de colores (¡gracias a los juegos de carnaval de este año!). 

-¿Estudiaste arte?                                                                                                                                  -Soy un artista autodidacta.  

-¿Cuánto tiempo llevas pintando?                                                                                                        -He estado pintando la mayor parte de mi vida durante 30 años. He estado pintando profesionalmente durante unos 10 años. 

-¿Cuáles son  los temas y las técnicas que usas en tus obras?                                                              -Pinto mis lienzos y mis murales con pinturas acrílicas. Mi trabajo es muy colorido, para que te sientas feliz al mirarlo. La mayoría de los temas están relacionados con la naturaleza y los elementos naturales, el océano, el sol, la música, la familia y la conexión. Mis pinturas reflejan lo que siento por Cozumel, es colorido, feliz y lleno de vida. 

-¿Cuál es tu técnica favorita?                                                                                                            -Mi técnica favorita se llama "pintura intuitiva", donde pinto un lienzo sin una idea o tema en mente. Siento mi camino a través de la pintura, y toma vida propia. También enseño esta técnica en la terapia de arte, que puede ayudar a fortalecer la salud mental y las habilidades de creatividad.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           -¿Cómo es la respuesta de la gente que ve tus pinturas?                                                                       La gente siempre me dice que se sienten felices y que les encantan todos los colores. 

-¿Por favor, cuéntenos sobre la obra que está exhibiendo esta vez en el Museo de la Isla de Cozumel.                                                                                                                                                -Mi pieza se titula "Vida y Muerte". Aunque el tema era el Día de los Muertos, también quería que se sintiera como Cozumel, y como los antepasados pueden haber celebrado este tiempo de manera humilde y sencilla con la pesca, la música, la danza y el Cempasúchil. Quería compartir muchos elementos naturales para mostrar cómo todo está conectado, incluso en contraste. Luz y oscuridad... tierra y mar... vida y muerte... Incluso el árbol está muerto pero lleno de vida, y las flores están por todas partes. El árbol y el arco de flores están hechos para parecer cíclicos, redondos, equilibrados, uno lleva al otro. La canoa nos recuerda tiempos más sencillos y cómo estábamos/somos conectados al mar, al viento y entre nosotros. 

-¿Por qué te gusta la cultura del Día de los Muertos en México?                                                          Para mí es un día para recordar los ciclos de la vida y la muerte, cómo el contraste lleva al equilibrio, cómo uno se convierte en el otro. Incluso en la muerte, hay vida. Me encanta honrar la cultura del Día de los Muertos en México porque me da la oportunidad de pensar en cómo estamos todos conectados, y cómo vivimos en los recuerdos y legados que dejamos atrás. 

-¿Te gustó la exposición de hoy? -¿Por qué?                                                                                         Me gustó mucho la exposición. Había tantos participantes con tantas interpretaciones del tema. Me pareció que todo estaba muy bien hecho.

-¿Como se sintió cuando interactuó con el Museo de la Isla de Cozumel y su museógrafa, la Lic. Sako?                                                                                                                                                    - Sako fue muy amable y acogedora, y el evento estuvo bien organizado y fue agradable. 

-¿Dónde más ha expuesto?                                                                                                                    -He expuesto con Otoño Cultural Cozumel 2016 (mi mural en la Plaza del Sol ganó el 3er lugar). También "Cozumel 500 Años Encuentro de Dos Culturas" También un pequeño museo en Descubriendo México en 2018.

-¿Your name please?                                                                                                                           - Autumn (Toñita) Morgan                              

-¿What do you do?                                                                                                                                - Professionally, I am an Artist, a Muralist, a Writer, and a Marketing Director. I’m also a mom of 3 kids, 6 cats, a dog, and 2 goldfish (thanks to Carnival games earlier this year!). 

-¿Did you study art?                                                                                                                              -I’m a self-taught artist.

-¿How long have you been making paintings?                                                                                       -I’ve been painting most of my life- over 30 years. I’ve been painting professionally for about 10 years. 

-¿What is or are your themes that you paint in your works?                                                                 -I paint my canvas and my murals with acrylic paints. My work is very colorful, so that you feel happy looking at it. Most of the themes are around nature and natural elements, the ocean, the sun, music, family, and connectedness. My paintings reflect how I feel about Cozumel- it’s colorful, happy, and full of life. 

-¿What is your favorite technique?                                                                                                       -My favorite technique is called “intuitive painting” where I paint a canvas without an idea or theme in mind. I feel my way through the painting, and it takes on a life of its own. I also teach this technique in art therapy, which can help strengthen mental health and creativity skills. 

-¿How is the response of the people who see your paintings?                                                              -People always tell me they feel happy and they love all of the colors. 

-¿Please tell us about the work you are exhibiting this time at the Museum of the Island of Cozumel.                                                                                                                                                 My piece is titled “Vida y Muerte”. While the theme was Dia de los Muertos, I also wanted it to feel like Cozumel, and how ancestors may have celebrated this time in humble, simple ways with fishing, music, dancing, and Cempasúchil. I wanted to share a lot of natural elements to show how everything is connected, even in contrast. Light and dark… land and sea… life and death… Even the tree is dead but full of life, and flowers are everywhere. The tree and the arch of flowers are meant to look cyclical- round, balanced, one leading into the other. The canoe reminds us of simpler times and how we were /are connected to the sea, the wind, and each other. 

-¿Why do you like the Day of the Dead culture in Mexico?                                                                 -For me it’s a day to remember the cycles of life and death, how contrast leads to balance, how one turns into the other. Even in death, there’s life. I love to honor Day of the Dead culture in Mexico because it gives me a chance to think about how we’re all connected, and how we live on in memories and legacies we leave behind us. 

-¿Did you like today's exhibition? -Why?                                                                                            I really enjoyed the exhibition. There were so many participants with so many translations of the theme. I thought it was all very beautifully-done.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               -¿How did you feel when you interacted with the Museum of the Island of Cozumel and its museographer, Ms. Sako?                                                                                                                     -She was very kind and welcoming, and the event was well-organized and enjoyable. 

-¿Where else have you exhibited?                                                                                                         I have exhibited with Otoño Cultural Cozumel 2016 (my mural in Plaza del Sol won 3rd place). Also”Cozumel 500 Años Encuentro de Dos Culturas.”Also a small museum in Discover Mexico in 2018.

-¿Su nombre por favor?                                                                                                                                -Tati Biermas

-¿A qué te dedicas?                                                                                                                                   -Soy fotógrafo.

-¿Estudiaste arte?                                                                                                                                        -Sí, estudié fotografía.

-¿Cuánto tiempo llevas haciendo pinturas?                                                                                               ---Mi trabajo es en realidad arte digital ya que no pinto. Sin embargo, estoy en el arte y la fotografía es todo en la vida. Por eso decidí convertirlo en mi carrera profesional. Nunca me gané la vida con cualquier otra cosa.

El título de mi obra expuesta es "Metamorfosis". Entiendo que la vida y la muerte están conectadas y todos los seres (y situaciones) se transforman de un estado a otro. Todo es constantemente cambiante. Elegí colores brillantes para expresar mi esperanza de cambio, y para una transformación en algo mejor. Para mí personalmente, pero también para Cozumel. Amo esta isla que llamo mi casa durante 15 años.

Por ejemplo, estoy convencida de que habrá un cambio para la isla y es el turismo... esperemos ...del turismo masivo destructivo al turismo de calidad que permite a los locales un ingreso decente... para una vida sana y decente. 

También implementé dos mariposas en mi trabajo, ya que también son un símbolo de transformación y los maestros de la metamorfosis.

-¿Cuál es tu técnica favorita?                                                                                                                        -fotografía, arte digital

-¿Cómo es la respuesta de la gente que ve tus pinturas?                                                                              -Siempre me dicen que están impresionados por mis ideas y creatividad.

-¿Por qué te gusta la cultura del Día de los Muertos en México?                                                                -Soy originaria de Alemania. Nuestra cultura alemana y la asociación con la muerte es muy diferente.    Sin embargo, desde que soy un niña me intrigan los cráneos y esqueletos... hasta el punto de que la gente en Alemania pensó que soy un bicho raro. Esto cambió totalmente cuando me enteré del Día de los Muertos en la cultura de México. Sentía que había encontrado un eslabón perdido. Me encanta cada aspecto del Día de la cultura de los muertos, y especialmente los colores. El naranja es mi color favorito.

-¿Te ha gustado la exposición de hoy? ¿Por qué?                                                                                        -¡Sí! Me encanta la organización del museo por ofrecer la oportunidad a los artistas locales de mostrar su trabajo. Hay tanto talento en esta isla. Especialmente en estos días desafiantes nuestras sociedades necesitan el arte.

El arte influye en la sociedad cambiando opiniones, inculcando valores y traduciendo experiencias a través del espacio y el tiempo. Hace que la gente se sienta optimista sobre su futuro y ayuda a difundir un mensaje de inspiración, haciendo que la gente logre grandes cosas en la vida. El arte es una forma de comunicación entre las personas, para que se centren en temas comunes para el mejoramiento de la humanidad.

-¿Como se sintió cuando interactuó con el Museo de la Isla de Cozumel y su museógrafa, la Lic. Sako? Simplemente la amo. Es tan profesional, organizada, trabajadora y siempre amable. ¡¡Es un verdadero tesoro!!

-¿What do you do?                                                                                                                                   -I'm a photographer.

-¿Did you study art?                                                                                                                                      -Yes, I studied photography

-¿How long have you been making paintings?                                                                                               My work is actually digital art as I don´t paint. However I´m into art and photography all my life. That´s why I decided to make it my professional carreer. I never made my living with anything else. 

-¿What is or are your themes that you paint in your works?                                                                        -The Title of my displayed work is "metamorphosis". I understand life and dead are connected and all beings (and situations) just transform from one state to another. Everything is constantly changing. I picked bright colors to express my hope for change, and for a transformation into something better. For me personally but also for Cozumel. I love this island that I call my home for 15 years.For example I´m convinced there will be a change for the island and it´s tourism... hopefully away from destructive mass tourism to quality tourism that allows the locals a decent income for a healthy decent life. I also implemented 2 butterflies in my work - as they are also a symbol for transformation and the masters of metamorphosis.

-¿How is the response of the people who see your work?                                                                           -They always tell me that they are impressed by my ideas and creativity.

-¿Why do you like the Day of the Dead culture in Mexico?                                                                        -I´m originally from Germany - our German culture and association with death is very different.

-However since I´m a child I´m intrigued by skulls and sceletons... to the point that people in Germany thought I´m a weirdo. This totally changed when I learned about the Day of the Dead culture in Mexico. It felt that I had found a missing link. I love every aspect of the Day of the Dead culture - and especially the colors. Orange is my favorite color.

-¿Did you like today's exhibition? -Why?                                                                                                     -Yes! I love the organization of the museum for offering the opportunity to local artists to display their work. There is so much talent on this island. Especially in these challenging times our societies needs art. Art influences society by changing opinions, instilling values and translating experiences across space and time. It makes people optimistic about their future and helps to spread a message of inspiration, making people achieve great things in life. Art is a form of communication between people, to focus on common issues for the betterment of humankind.

-¿How did you feel when you interacted with the Museum of the Island of Cozumel and its museographer Sako?                                                                                                                                     -I just LOVE her. She is so professional, organized, hard working and always kind. She is a true treasure!!!
