Art News Cozumel tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar en su taller y galería a Saúl Jaime Martínez escultor de la Isla de Cozumel a unos días previos a su próxima exposición "El Lenguaje de nuestras Raíces" en el museo de la isla de Cozumel, siendo la inauguración el 28 de mayo a las 7 pm; podrá apreciarla en facebook live en la página de la Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel.
-Mi nombre es Saúl Jaime y soy escultor en madera, también trabajo ocasionalmente piedra, pero la madera es mi materia prima predilecta.
-¿Como te iniciaste en esta disciplina?
-Es una historia interesante, una historia de hace mucho tiempo cuando llegue a estos lugares a isla mujeres, ahí empecé a trabajar como guía de esnórquel y sucede que en esa región nos agarro el huracán Gilberto, ahí nos bautizo, hubo bastante tiempo que no tuvimos trabajo todo estaba en reconstrucción y en esos trabajos vinieron muchas personas de varios lados entre ellos unos constructores hondureños ebanistas que también trabajaban puertas muy preciosas, contacte con ellos para trabajar y me lo dieron como ayudante, es ahí donde empecé a trabajar la madera, adentrarme lo que es la escultura.
-¿Tus temas favoritos cuales son?
-Precisamente los temas favoritos o que reflejan mi trabajo son temas marinos debido que le agarre mucho cariño al mar cuando era guía esnórquel, ahí donde me fui haciendo como muy amigo del mar, la mayor parte de mi obra es sobre temas marinos.
-Platícame sobre tu próxima exposición
-En este mes de Mayo tendré una exposición, por cierto yo invito a toda la gente de nuestra amada isla de Cozumel este viernes 28 de mayo a la 7 de la noche, están todos invitados a la exposición se llama "El Lenguaje de Nuestras Raíces y bueno espero que vaya mucha gente.
-¿Es como una retrospectiva pequeña?
Es una retrospectiva , tengo obra privada mía, obra que va estar en venta o que ya se vendió, obras de coleccionistas privados que me están haciendo el favor de facilitarme para que la exposición cumpla su finalidad; mostrar mi producciones al amable visitante a la sala del museo.
-¿Esta exposición es como el fruto de tu trabajo de varios años?
-Sí, por supuesto, en primer lugar exponer en el museo es un honor, porque el museo abre las puertas a todos los artistas locales y extranjeros, el museo nos da la oportunidad de exponer y darnos a conocer, de vender nuestra obra, de proyectar nuestro trabajo a México y en otros lugares del mundo, el museo tiene impacto en todo el mundo.
-¿Qué es lo que te gusta de la comunidad de artistas de la isla y que no te gusta?
-Lo que me gusta es que todos son muy creativos, muy originales, muy independientes, lo que no me gusta es que no hay mucha unión entre nosotros, me gustaría que fuéramos más unidos, que nos apoyáramos más que todos estuviéramos en el mismo canal.
-¿Tus planes a corto plazo?
-Que bueno que me lo preguntas, acabo de recibir una invitación para ir a exponer a Colombia con la delegación mexicana, es este 15 y 21 de julio, hay un gran evento en Bogotá. Los gobiernos de Colombia y de México tienen un evento muy grande bilateral "México Colombia 2021" va hacer una oportunidad muy importante para mi exponer en otro país mi obra, lo más bonito es que voy a representar a México y lo más bonito representar a mi amada isla de Cozumel.
-¿Mensaje a las nuevas generaciones que se interesen en el arte?
Todas las generaciones desde niños, jóvenes, adultos, adultos mayores deben practicar una práctica disciplina artística aunque su idea no sea necesariamente ser un artista. Y bueno entre los niños y jóvenes podría surgir artistas muy importantes, hay mucho talento en la isla. Desde niños se va formando un carácter, una forma más humana de ser y por lo tanto esos niños van a ser mejores personas, creo que el arte es tan necesario para el alma como el alimento al cuerpo.
- ¿Qué piensas que haya exposiciones internacionales en el museo de la isla de Cozumel como la del maestro Shinzaburo Takeda que actualmente se exhibe?
-Es un privilegio que tenemos todos los habitantes de Cozumel en recibir obra tan importante como la del maestro Takeda, estamos hablando de personas mayores, porque el maestro Takeda tiene una gran trayectoria, tan sólo observar su obra te das cuenta de que calidad de artista tenemos en el museo en este momento.
-¿Entonces te gustaría seguir viendo obras internacionales en el museo de la isla de Cozumel?
-Por su puesto, al ver obra tan importante y de tanta calidad uno como artista se va nutriendo de conceptos diferentes, te enriquecen en mi caso como escultor observo obra de otras personas que son muchísimo mejores que yo, desde muchísimo tiempo. eso me motiva mucho hacer cosas diferentes.
-¿Algo más que desees decir?
-Pues más que todo agradecer al museo de la isla de Cozumel a la Licenciada Isela Carrillo y a la Licenciada Sako que es la persona que se encarga de la museografía y nos ayuda mucho a los artistas a que la obra se vea mucho mejor. Fíjate que hablando con mi esposa le mencionaba que trabajar con Sako a sido interesante porque ella es bastante perfeccionista quiere que las cosas salgan al 100 por ciento y pues uno como artista esta acostumbrado a la indisciplina, pero uno tiene que disciplinarse así como ella trabaja de esta manera debería trabajar todo todo el mundo para que las cosas salgan bien, como deben ser.

-My name is Saúl Jaime and I am a wood sculptor, I also occasionally work with stone, but wood is my favorite raw material.
-How did you get started in this discipline?
-It's an interesting story, a story from a long time ago when I arrived to Isla Mujeres, there I started working as a snorkeling guide and it happened that in that region we were hit by hurricane Gilberto, that's when he baptized us, There was a long time that we had no work, everything was in reconstruction and in those works came many people from various sides among them some Honduran builders and cabinetmakers who also worked very beautiful doors, I contacted them to work and they gave me as an assistant, that's where I started to work with wood, enter what is the sculpture.
-What are your favorite themes?
-Precisely the favorite themes or that reflect my work are marine themes because I became very fond of the sea when I was a snorkel guide, that's where I became very close to the sea, most of my work is about marine themes.
-Tell me about your next exhibition.
-In this month of May I will have an exhibition, by the way I invite all the people of our beloved island of Cozumel this Friday May 28th at 7 pm, you are all invited to the exhibition called "The Language of Our Roots" and I hope many people will attend.
-Is it like a small retrospective?
It is a retrospective, I have private works of mine, works that will be for sale or that have already been sold, works from private collectors who are doing me the favor of facilitating me so that the exhibition can fulfill its purpose; to show my productions to the kind visitor to the museum hall.
-This exhibition is like the fruit of your work of several years?
-Yes, of course, first of all to exhibit in the museum is an honor, because the museum opens the doors to all local and foreign artists, the museum gives us the opportunity to exhibit and make ourselves known, to sell our work, to project our work to Mexico and other places in the world, the museum has an impact all over the world.
-What do you like about the community of artists on the island and what don't you like?
-What I like is that everyone is very creative, very original, very independent, what I don't like is that there is not much unity among us, I would like us to be more united, that we support each other more, that we are all on the same channel.
-What are your short term plans?
-I have just received an invitation to exhibit in Colombia with the Mexican delegation, it is this July 15 and 21, there is a big event in Bogota. The governments of Colombia and Mexico have a very big bilateral event "Mexico Colombia 2021", it will be a very important opportunity for me to exhibit my work in another country, the most beautiful thing is that I will represent Mexico and the most beautiful thing is to represent my beloved island of Cozumel.
-Message to the new generations who are interested in art?
All generations from children, youth, adults, seniors should practice an artistic discipline even if their idea is not necessarily to be an artist. And well, among children and young people very important artists could emerge, there is a lot of talent on the island. From childhood a character is formed, a more human way of being and therefore these children will be better people, I believe that art is as necessary for the soul as food for the body.
- What do you think about the fact that there are international exhibitions in the museum of the island of Cozumel, such as the one of master Shinzaburo Takeda that is currently on display?
-It is a privilege that all the inhabitants of Cozumel have to receive such important work as that of Master Takeda, we are talking about older people, because Master Takeda has a great trajectory, just by observing his work you realize what quality of artist we have in the museum at this moment.
-So you would like to continue seeing international works in the museum on the island of Cozumel?
-Of course, when you see such important and high quality work, as an artist you are nourished by different concepts, it enriches you, in my case as a sculptor I observe the work of other people who are much better than me, for a long time. that motivates me a lot to do different things.
-Anything else you would like to say?
-First of all, I would like to thank the museum of the island of Cozumel, Ms. Isela Carrillo and Ms. Sako, who is the person in charge of the museography and who helps us artists a lot to make the work look much better. I mentioned to my wife that working with Sako has been interesting because she is quite a perfectionist, she wants things to go 100 percent and as an artist one is used to indiscipline, but one has to be disciplined, just as she works in this way, everyone should work so that things go well, as they should be.
