Agradable es conocer personas cuyo oficio es la creación artística, que muestran un sólido interés en apoyar la integración de la comunidad artística y la difusión del arte para que sea beneficiado la exhibición y venta de la producción de los trabajadores del arte, en una región tan adecuado para ello como lo es la isla de San Miguel de Cozumel. Ese es el caso de Deysi Báez que con su Galería Jcobalto Art lo manifiesta y lo vincula con el espacio externo de la plaza donde esta instalada su morada artística, para organizar actividad de arte y cultura con el Callejón del Arte, que con su tenacidad ya cumplirá la 4 edición.

Entrevista a Deysi Báez

-Deysi Báez, artista plástica de República Dominicana

-¿Me puedes decir sobre tu galería? 

-Es galería estudio, se me ocurrió poner este pequeño negocio, se podría decir que es un pedacito de mi corazón, donde yo creo todos los días, la idea es estar aquí creando y que las personas vean lo que hago, o sea ser más visible, porque normalmente nosotros los artistas plásticos estamos en nuestros espacios creando y haciendo, pero nadie ve lo que hacemos se nos dificulta mucho la venta y se que lo que hago a la gente le gusta, se me ocurrió hacer este estudio galería más abierto al público.

-¿Qué estudiaste y cuánto tiempo llevas?

-Soy licenciada en artes visuales, la verdad llevo creando toda mi vida, pero en experiencia laboral como artista plástica podría decirse desde que estaba estudiando artes plásticas, porque me  empezaron hacer pequeños encargos, colabore con otros artistas en sus talleres, entonces me pagaban por eso y vendí uno que otros trabajos que hice en la escuela y como experiencia en el estudio podría decirse que desde el 2010 que fue el primer estudio que puse al público y es ahí donde aprendí a hacer exposiciones a dar talleres de arte, de pintura para adulto, para niños y es ahí donde empecé a desenvolverme más, a laborar como artista.

-¿En qué temáticas y en qué técnicas te has especializado?

-Tengo la facilidad de manejar muchas técnicas, pero la que más me gusta es el óleo, es la ventaja de estudiar artes plásticas que uno puede experimentar diferentes técnicas, una de esas es la escultura, porque a mi me gusta la escultura solo que es más complicado vender la escultura, moverla y más laborioso y es más costoso entonces hago escultura, pero solo para encargos o proyectos personales que hago. 

A mi me gusta el retrato, desnudo femenino es lo que más me encanta hacer, igual hacer más cosas porque hago mucho trabajo por encargo, unas de las ventajas de hacer trabajo por encargo es explorar otros campos; técnicas y hacer cosas diferentes pero amo el óleo.

-Ahora en cuanto lo referente al Callejón del Arte, ¿Cómo surgió la idea, cómo va el proyecto?

-Pues la idea surgió porque la galería está en una plaza; en la Plaza Confetti y en la plaza se presta para hacer muchas actividades culturales y digo culturales, porque  lo que más me llama la atención es hacer actividades de este tipo para que la gente, la comunidad se integre. Otra cosa que me interesa es que otros artistas se presten para hacer parte en el proyecto cultural y se me ocurrió que se haga una vez al mes mínimo, para que sea un callejón del arte donde haya artistas pintando, dando talleres mostrando su trabajo y ahí vamos. Ya viene  la cuarta edición y va muy bien, poco a poco se van integrando los artistas y otra cosa que he notado acá en Cozumel es que la gente le da mucha pena que vean lo que hace, entonces poco a poco se están abriendo.

-¿La comunidad artística va creciendo?

-Sí, van apoyando poco a poco, se están abriendo y el público maravillado están apoyando mucho en el día del evento, están llegando mucha gente y también consumen local, porque la idea es que le compren a los artistas, son obras originales, que están hechas a mano y muy accesibles para todos.

-¿Qué opinas de la comunidad artística de Cozumel?

-Yo creo que deberíamos unirnos más porque cada quien está en su rollo, pero todos tenemos el mismo motivo darnos a conocer y vender. pero si nosotros como artistas nos unimos más podríamos hacer una comunidad muy bonita de arte, porque hay muchos artistas aquí en la isla que hacen cosas muy lindas , pero no se ven y lo poco que se ven participan en unos eventos, que seamos más unidos como artistas se podrían hacer cosas muy bonitas.

-¿Antes estabas en Playa del Carmen?

-No, antes estaba en ciudad de México, mi galería la quería poner ahí pero la verdad quería ir a una ciudad más turística, por eso llegué aquí en Cozumel llevo aquí año y medio.

-¿Cual es tu próxima actividad aquí?

-Ahora, la gente ha aceptado muy bien el espacio, están bien las clases están participando en el Callejón del Arte va marchando, fluyendo bonito, pues la idea es estar un buen rato, seguir creciendo y tratar de seguir haciendo actividades culturales donde la gente se pueda integrar. 

-¿El próximo evento es ?

-Es próximo evento del callejón del arte es el sábado 22 de octubre de 4 pm a 9 pm y se están integrando otros artistas de Playa del Carmen, entonces siempre va a ver cosas diferentes, lo chulo del Callejón del Arte es que no solamente son artísticas plásticos pueden participar diseñadores, moda arte, artesanos, es para todos, que asistan, que vean que es una comunidad muy bonita, que Cozumel se conozca por que vendemos cosa original y bonita hecha a mano.

-¿Qué requisitos deben cubrir los que desean participar en el callejón del arte?

-Bueno que primero se comuniquen conmigo y luego manden fotos de los trabajos que realizan, traer sus mesas para mostrar su trabajos y se pide una cooperación de 200 pesos, nosotros le damos  mucha publicidad al evento, en realidad no se le piden muchos requisitos, más que nada que tengan buena presentación los trabajos que expongan. 

-¿Qué es lo que más recuerdas de las ediciones del callejón del arte?

-Lo más bonito, lo que me encanta es como vienen alumnos míos, nos ponemos a pintar y tanto los extranjero y locales vienen y se sorprenden mucho porque ven algo diferente, es muy raro que se haga una actividad cultural aquí, que se vea mucho arte, sí están los bazares y hacen muchas cosas, pero que veas al artista creando, que se cante,  todo eso es lo bonito y ha llamado mucho la atención por eso lo sigo haciendo.

-¿Algo más que quieras decir Deysi?

-Pues que vengan a visitar mi estudio estoy en Plaza Confetti frente al parque Benito Juárez laboro de 11 de la mañana a 7 de la noche, les gustará muchísimo, es diferente, pero muy bonito y está abierto para el  todo público.

It is pleasant to meet people whose profession is artistic creation and who show a solid interest in supporting the integration of the artistic community and the dissemination of art so that the exhibition and sale of the production of art workers in a region as suitable for it as the island of San Miguel de Cozumel can benefit. That is the case of Deysi Baez who with her Gallery Jcobalto Art manifests it and links it with the external space of the square where her artistic abode is installed to organize art and cultural activities with the Art Alley, which with her tenacity will already be in its 4th edition.

Interview with Daisy Baez

-Deisy Baes, visual artist from Dominican Republic

-Can you tell me about your gallery? 

-The idea is to be here creating and for people to see what I do, that is, to be more visible, because normally we artists are in our spaces creating and doing, but nobody sees what we do, it is very difficult for us to sell and I know that people like what I do, so I decided to make this gallery studio more open to the public.

-What did you study and how long have you been studying?

-I have been creating all my life, but in terms of work experience as a visual artist, I could say since I was studying visual arts, because I started to do small commissions, I collaborated with other artists in their workshops, then they paid me for that and I came to work with them, Then they paid me for that and I sold some of the works I did in school and as experience in the studio I could say that since 2010 was the first studio that I put to the public and that's where I learned to make exhibitions and give art workshops, painting for adults, for children and that's where I started to develop myself more, to work as an artist.

-What themes and techniques have you specialized in?

-I have the facility to handle many techniques, but the one I like the most is oil painting, it is the advantage of studying plastic arts that one can experiment different techniques, one of those is sculpture, because I like sculpture but it is more complicated to sell the sculpture, move it and more laborious and it is more expensive so I do sculpture, but only for commissions or personal projects that I do. 

I like portraits, female nudes is what I love to do the most, I also do more things because I do a lot of commissioned work, one of the advantages of doing commissioned work is to explore other fields; techniques and do different things but I love oil painting.

-Now about the Art Alley, how did the idea come up, how is the project going?

-Well, the idea came up because the gallery is in a square; in the Confetti Square and the square lends itself to many cultural activities, and I say cultural, because what most attracts my attention is to do activities of this type so that people, the community is integrated. Another thing that interests me is that other artists lend themselves to take part in the cultural project and it occurred to me that it should be done at least once a month, to be an art alley where there are artists painting, giving workshops showing their work and there we go. The fourth edition is coming and it is going very well, little by little the artists are integrating and another thing I have noticed here in Cozumel is that people are very embarrassed to see what they do, so little by little they are opening up.

-Is the artistic community growing?

-Yes, they are supporting little by little, they are opening up and the public is amazed, they are supporting a lot on the day of the event, many people are coming and they also consume locally, because the idea is that they buy from the artists, they are original works, which are handmade and very accessible to everyone.

-What do you think of Cozumel's artistic community?

-I think we should unite more because everyone is on their own, but we all have the same motive to make ourselves known and sell. But if we as artists unite more we could make a very nice art community, because there are many artists here on the island who do very nice things, but they are not seen and the few that are seen participate in some events, if we are more united as artists we could do very nice things.

-Were you previously in Playa del Carmen?

-No, before I was in Mexico City, I wanted to put my gallery there but I really wanted to go to a more touristic city, that's why I came here to Cozumel, I've been here for a year and a half.

-What is your next activity here?

-Now, people have accepted the space very well, the classes are participating in the Art Alley, it's going well, flowing nicely, the idea is to be here for a while, to keep growing and to try to continue doing cultural activities where people can integrate. 

-The next event is ?

-The next Art Alley event is on Saturday October 22nd from 4 pm to 9 pm and other artists from Playa del Carmen are joining, so you will always see different things, the cool thing about the Art Alley is that not only plastic arts can participate designers, fashion art, artisans, it is for everyone, to attend, to see that it is a very nice community, that Cozumel is known because we sell original and beautiful handmade things.

-What are the requirements for those who wish to participate in the art alley?

-Well, they must first contact me and then send photos of the works they make, bring their tables to show their work and we ask for a cooperation of 200 pesos, we give a lot of publicity to the event, in reality we don't ask for many requirements, more than anything that the works they exhibit have a good presentation. 

-What do you remember most about the editions of the Art Alley?

-The most beautiful thing, what I love is how my students come, we start painting and both foreigners and locals come and are very surprised because they see something different, it is very rare that a cultural activity is done here, that you see a lot of art, yes there are bazaars and they do many things, but you see the artist creating, singing, all that is beautiful and has attracted much attention, that's why I keep doing it.

-Anything else you want to say Deysi?

-Well, come and visit my studio, I am in Plaza Confetti in front of Benito Juarez Park, I work from 11 am to 7 pm, you will like it very much, it is different, but very nice and it is open to the public.
